Ultramarine Master of the Chapter

by Vent, added 3rd Sep 2010

A friend I met online wanted me to paint him a Master for his Ultramarine Army. I've only been painting for over a year but have come to really enjoy the hobby, and am always looking for feedback. This is a series of shots from first stage to last. I always paint flesh first which I've been told is a strange way of doing things... You'll also notice I still have trouble with doing gems... All advice and constructive criticism is appreciated :)

Think the paint job looks ace, although I do agree with torm3nt. Your paints could do with thinning slightly. I always paint the faces first as it gives your model a character to paint to, so don't listen to people telling you you're strange. You do what feels right. Gems are tricky, but looking at what you have done you're on the money. My brother likes to experiment with different varnishes on gems, maybe try a gloss finish to enchance them?

Nice work. I like the way the colours work together, it's a very nice scheme.

Hey vent! First and foremost, great piece! You're very neat, and that's the hallmark of a great painter! I would probably thin my paints a little more, as your highlights are nice and crisp, but a tad clumpy, meaning that the paint is drying too quickly for this. i would also exaggerate the highlights just a little more (make them a little lighter). Otherwise your general idea and use of colour is fantastic.
